As the first in the DNALC series of camps, Fun with DNA is offered in-person at DNALC locations as well as virtually on-demand. In addition, in collaboration with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE), we have developed a special expanded version of the camp, WiSE Fun with DNA.

In-person Fun with DNA

Fun with DNA is an entry-level course in DNA science. This camp is designed especially for highly motivated students interested in expanding their knowledge of basic genetics and cell biology. Students are immersed in an environment of hands-on activities and laboratory experiments designed to increase genetic literacy, encourage critical and creative thinking, and spark interest in the field of biotechnology.

Campers will:

  • construct cell and DNA models;
  • use compound microscopes to view various cell types;
  • extract DNA from their own cells and from plants;
  • use stereo microscopes to observe mutations in fruit flies; and
  • genetically engineer bacteria cells with firefly genes.

Details:

  • Entering grades 6–7
  • Monday to Thursday 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Parent Day Friday, 9:30-11:00 a.m.
  • $580 per student In-person
  • Week of 7/1 camp is condensed to Monday–Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with no class Thursday–Friday and no Parent Day. Includes the full curriculum for $500 discounted tuition.

In-person Fun with DNA

Word to the “WiSE”—DNA is fun! WiSE Fun with DNA is an entry-level course in DNA science. This camp is designed for highly motivated young women and non-binary students interested in expanding their knowledge of basic genetics and cell biology. Participants are immersed in hands-on activities and laboratory experiments designed to increase genetic literacy, encourage critical and creative thinking, and spark interest in the field of biotechnology. The week concludes with Parent Participation Day, when the students become teachers and share all that they’ve learned through the week’s activities.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to meet WiSE scientists from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and hear about current research, participate in special WiSE activities to learn about the discoveries of historical and contemporary women scientists, and most importantly be inspired to pursue their interests in science!

Campers will:

  • construct cell and DNA models;
  • extract DNA from plant and cells;
  • use stereo microscopes to observe mutations in fruit flies and roundworms;
  • genetically engineer bacteria cells with firefly genes;
  • participate in special WiSE activities each afternoon; and
  • meet WiSE scientists from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory who study cancer, plant biology, neuroscience, and more.

*CSHL WiSE is a trainee-founded and trainee-led grassroots organization that is centered on supporting women scientists with multiple marginalized identities, including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, and disability. We strive to provide a platform for the professional development and empowerment of women scientists at CSHL and in our local Long Island community through mentorship and outreach, as well as by providing mental health and educational resources. Our mission is to promote a more supportive and equal scientific community across all academic levels in scientific research.
